Magnetospheric energy inputs into the upper atmospheres of the giant planets

چکیده
We revisit the effects of Joule heating upon the upper atmospheres of Jupiter and Saturn. We show that in addition to direct Joule heating there is an additional input of kinetic energy − ion drag energy − which we quantify relative to the Joule heating. We also show that fluctuations about the mean electric field, as observed in the Earth’s ionosphere, may significantly increase the Joule heating itself. For physically plausible parameters these effects may increase previous estimates of the upper atmospheric energy input at Saturn from ∼10 TW to ∼20 TW.

Temperature changes and energy inputs in giant planet atmospheres: what we are learning from H3+.
Since its discovery at Jupiter in 1988, emission from H(3)(+) has been used as a valuable diagnostic tool in our understanding of the upper atmospheres of the giant planets. One of the lasting questions we have about the giant planets is why the measured upper atmosphere temperatures are always consistently hotter than the temperatures expected from solar heating alone. Here, we describe how H(...
متن کاملMechanisms of Jet Formation on the Giant Planets
The giant planet atmospheres exhibit alternating prograde (eastward) and retrograde (westward) jets of different speeds and widths, with an equatorial jet that is prograde on Jupiter and Saturn and retrograde on Uranus and Neptune. The jets are variously thought to be driven by differential radiative heating of the upper atmosphere or by intrinsic heat fluxes emanating from the deep interior. H...

Stratospheric heating, condensation, convective transport of non-equilibrium species, and deep radiative energy transport are important processes in the atmospheres of the solar jovian planets. They likely affect the atmospheres of extrasolar giant planets and brown dwarfs as well. Stratospheric temperatures control thermal fluxes in strong molecular bands, and may dramatically affect observed ...
متن کاملAtmospheric Chemistry in Giant Planets , Brown Dwarfs , and Low - Mass Dwarf Stars II . Sulfur and Phosphorus
Thermochemical equilibrium and kinetic calculations are used to model sulfur and phosphorus chemistry in giant planets, brown dwarfs, and extrasolar giant planets (EGPs). The chemical behavior of individual Sand P-bearing gases and condensates is determined as a function of pressure, temperature, and metallicity. The results are independent of particular model atmospheres and, in principle, the...

Our knowledge of the composition and physical properties of planetary atmospheres is impotiant for the understanding of the origin and evolution of the planets themselves, as well as for providing a comparative basis for understanding the Earth”s atmosphere. The physical conditions of planetary atmospheres vary widely from place to place within a given atmosphere and from planet to planet. Cons...
